Litter Critters, 2013 / 2016
Philadelphia Mural Arts Program and City of Philadelphia Department of Streets
In 2010, the city started installing super-efficient BigBelly solar-powered compacting trash cans as part of a city-wide initiative to decrease litter and promote environmental awareness. Sarah Folger, along with students participating in free after-school and summer art classes, designed two rounds of Big Belly solar compactors along the Frankford Avenue Arts Corridor in Fishtown and South Street in 2013 and again in 2015-2016. The students explored character design and color theory to create the captivating creatures in the hopes of inspiring the public to feed them their trash instead of throwing it on the street.
