Philadelphia Mural Arts Program

While with the City of Philadelphia Mural Arts Program, Sarah Folger worked with two after-school art classes to invent anime-inspired superhero characters. These characters were designed to battle against social justice issues that were important to them. After class-wide discussions about the problems that affect their daily lives, they worked together using mostly recycled materials to build extravagant costumes that spoke to the character’s ideals. Each character was then portrayed by student volunteers from each class while the others worked behind the scenes during a student-led photoshoot. After displaying their photo series in a large student exhibition, the group helped design posters featuring their characters for public transit stations all around Philadelphia.
