Mosaic Bench Project:
2019-2021
Penn Museum and The Philadelphia Juvenile Justice Services Center School
Inspired by a Roman mosaic floor found in Tunisia (100-200 CE), students impacted by the justice system worked with Sarah Folger to create original designs as a response to the ancient Roman artisans. By closely examining and breaking down the original design elements, the students “re-mixed” them into unique collages. They simulated the laying down of mosaic tiles by creating colorful sponge paintings in four distinct color stories. Taking the work done in the classroom, Sarah combined these elements into digital designs printed on vinyl and wrapped on four community benches in the Penn Museum courtyard.
