Hack This Classroom: Open House, 2014

Philadelphia Mural Arts Program

During the summer of 2013, Public Workshop worked with the students of Mural Arts' Artrepreneurs Program to "Hack Their Classroom" at the Asian Arts Initiative. Sarah Folger and students participating in Mural Art’s after-school program planned and held an interactive open house to welcome visitors to the new space. The event was designed to be student lead, a way to invert the typical adult lead classroom dynamic. It was important to the project that young people not only lead the lessons but teach the things they believe adults and teachers should know in a way that they chose. What resulted was an evening of pure joy as visitors experienced a Mindcraft tutorial, learned how to take a good selfie, created protest buttons, and dropped everything every hour to participate in a student choreographed dance.
